Recent changes to the Motor Vehicle Act

Duty to notify Registrar of transfer of Vehicle

Whilst the buyer of a vehicle has been legally required to transfer a motor vehicle registration within 14 days, there will be a requirement on the seller to also advise the registrar. This notice will have to be done within 14 days .Although if the seller is applying for cancellation must also be advised within 14 days. Failure to comply with the requirement will incur an expiation fee of $160.00.

 There will be 12 months grace to enable the community to comply with the new laws.

Registration of Motor Vehicles

The maximum penalty for driving an unregistered vehicle is to increase from $750.00 to $2500.00

Driving an Uninsured Vehicle

 Motor vehicles registered in S.A have bodily injury insurance attached to the registration. When the registration expires there is a 30 day grace period provided but after that a vehicle becomes uninsured and a separate/ offence is created, that of driving an uninsured vehicle. This offence will carry a maximum penalty of $5000.00 and will be dealt with an expiation notice of $500.00

CLUB REGO NOTE OWNERS OF HISTORIC VEHICLES ARE REMINDED FAILING TO RENEW MEMBERSHIP BY THE END OF JULY AND  FAILING TO HAVE THE LOG BOOK STAMPED BY THE CLUB REGISTRARS WILL RESULT IN THEIR VEHICLE  BEEN DEEMED UNREGISTRED AND UNINSURED.           YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED 

Number plates offences

The Act addresses a number of offences in regard to carrying number plate’s .These offences will feature penalty increases from $250.00 to a max of $5000.00.Of similar importance to motorists is that while the expiation notices fees of $69.00 or $83.00, when the change becomes law they will attract an expiation fee of $500.00. Failing to return number plates will incur an expiation fee of $200.00.

SO REMOVE THOSE PLASTIC VINYL LETTERED NUMBER PLATES AND GET SOME ISSUED TO YOU FROM TRANSPORT SA OR SUFFER THE COST OF DEFECTIVE PLATE EXPIATION COST TO YOU   $200.00
